Inventory before copying anything

List the user accounts, documents, photos, browser data, email, licensed applications, printers, external drives, and special business software used on the old computer. Confirm that important files are actually stored where you expect.

Create a separate backup first

A migration should not be the only copy of important data. Make a verified backup before removing files, upgrading the old system, or resetting any device. If the old drive is failing, stop unnecessary use and address data recovery before a large transfer.

Configure the new computer in a sensible order

Install system updates, create the correct user account, enable security features, connect cloud or email accounts, install trusted applications, and then move data. This reduces duplicate files and makes problems easier to isolate.

Test the work that matters

Open representative documents and photos, send and receive email, print and scan, sign into required websites, and verify shared files or business applications. Do not erase the old computer until the new one has been used successfully.

Plan the old computer’s next step

Depending on its condition, the old computer may become a backup device, be securely wiped for reuse, recycled, or retained briefly as a fallback. Sensitive data should be handled deliberately rather than left on an abandoned drive.
