The network identity changed

Devices remember a Wi-Fi name, password, and security configuration. A replacement gateway with different settings is a different network even when it provides internet access to a newly connected phone.

Many connected devices rely on 2.4 GHz

Phones may join a fast 5 or 6 GHz band while a printer or sensor needs 2.4 GHz and compatible security. Band steering, WPA settings, guest isolation, and setup-phone permissions can complicate reconnection.

Reusing the old name can help, but verify security

Matching the previous network name and password may reconnect many devices, provided the new router supports compatible security. It can also reconnect devices you no longer want, so review the device list afterward.

Document accounts before factory-resetting devices

Cameras, thermostats, and doorbells may be tied to owner accounts, subscriptions, or shared access. Confirm credentials and ownership before resets that could require physical reinstallation or erase settings.
