A filename can appear without a full local copy
Files On-Demand can show cloud content in File Explorer while downloading it only when opened. Status icons matter when preparing to travel, replace a computer, or disconnect an account.
Desktop and Documents may have moved into OneDrive
Folder backup can redirect familiar folders into the OneDrive account. Signing into a different account or stopping synchronization may make files appear missing even when they still exist elsewhere.
Synchronization can also synchronize mistakes
Deletion, corruption, or unwanted changes may propagate. Version history and recycling features help, but important data still needs a separate, tested backup appropriate to its value.
Verify before resetting or selling a computer
Open representative files, confirm the account, review cloud storage, and make an independent copy before erasing the old device. A green status symbol alone is not a complete migration plan.
